Open Science is changing the way we approach scientific research. Its main goal is maximum transparency, accessibility, and reproducibility. Thanks to Open Science, scientific knowledge reaches a wide audience—from students to the general public—which directly strengthens the credibility and societal impact of science.
What are the pillars of Open Science?
- Open Access: Scientific publications are freely available online, without financial, legal, or technical barriers.
- Open Research Data: Research data follows the so-called FAIR principles (it must be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable). In the humanities, this primarily involves digitized texts, visual materials, and language corpora. This makes the data easy to verify and reuse.
- Transparency and reproducibility: Openly sharing research procedures, code, algorithms, and annotations allows other researchers to verify the results and build directly upon your work.
- Citizen Science: This involves actively engaging the public in data collection or interpretation, thereby deepening the relationship between science and society.
These principles are fully supported by European Union policies, which regard open science as a key pillar of the European Research Area.
Open Science, digital humanities and DARIAH-SK
Digital Humanities naturally build on the principles of open science. These approaches strongly promote interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, computer scientists, librarians, and other experts.
The European research infrastructure DARIAH-EU aims precisely to connect these researchers, data, and tools across Europe. As the national platform DARIAH-SK, we actively contribute to this goal by:
- supporting domestic institutions in building open research infrastructures,
- supporting the sharing of FAIR research data,
- sharing open tools and software for data analysis,
- providing professional support for researchers.
